Widmer’s Brrrbon on tap at 15th Ave

Widmer-BrrrbonWidmer Brothers and Hophouse present an ongoing seasonal beer event, beginning on 12/18, featuring three of Widmer’s famed seasonal ales, the Brrrbon series, vintage 2013. Now you can taste all three of these unique, flavorful beers at one event.

Kick-off night is Wednesday 12/18 at 6:00, when Nick Reely from Widmer will be on hand to pour tasters and snifters of all three beers at a discount.

Special pricing available – $5 for the taster flight of all three beers, or $6 for a snifter pour of one of the beers. Prices and flights good while quantities last, hopefully throughout the holiday.

Barrel Aged Brrrbon ’13. This beer is an imperial version of their Brrr seasonal ale, aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. This smooth winter warmer combines a rich malty sweetness with complex oak, vanilla and caramel characters … 9.5% ABV, 40 ABU.

Vanilla Barrel Aged Brrrbon ’13. The brewers added fresh whole vanilla beans to a few select barrels of Brrrbon ’13, which heightens the vanilla character imparted by the barrels, and adds a delicious layer of complexity to the beer’s oak and caramel character. 10.7% ABV, 40 IBU.

Ginger Barrel Aged Brrbon ’13. The brewers added fresh chopped ginger to the Brrrbon ’13. The addition of ginger complements the oak, vanilla and caramel flavors of the beer, and results in a unique, smooth winter warmer perfect for the season. 10.7& ABV, 40 IBU.

Nick will be on hand pouring the first night (12/18 6:00 – 8:00 PM), and our Hophouse staff will continuing pouring the specially-priced flights and seasonal beers until the taps run dry, hopefully throughout the holiday. We’ll also have several other Widmer specialty beers on tap all month, as part of a collaboration with our Widmer neighbors.

And as always, $10 growler fills on select beers. Come fill up for the holidays!

Get ready, beer lovers! Hawthorne Hophouse and Fifteenth Avenue Hophouse are teaming up with the also-locally-owned The Zythos Project (creator and manufacturer of the stainless steel growler Bräuler) for the first large-scale beer tasting contest in Portland: PDX BEER BRÄUL. For PDX beer week, June 6-16th, you’ll have the chance to show off your beer knowledge prowess in a blind tasting competition, featuring beers from the following Portland breweries: Migration, HUB, Occidental, Laurelwood, Base Camp, Lompoc, Commons, Upright, Gigantic, Burnside, Natian, and Amnesia. For ten bucks, you can sign up for this competition, by yourself or with a cohort, and see how well you know your Portland beers. Here’s how it works: participants will get two flights of six beers (one from each of the aforementioned breweries), unmarked; the first flight will be paler beers, the second darker beers. Each six-flight will have a corresponding list, and you’ll have to match each of the six beers to a particular brewery/beer. Participants will have one flight at a time in order to maintain cool temperature of the beer, and to increase accuracy. We tried a version of this at our employee Christmas party, and believe me: it’s not as easy as you’d think! In order to maintain a level playing field, both pubs will have the same line-up for the duration of PDX Beer Week. Sign up at either one! At both Hophouses, on Tuesday, June 11th, the price for entry will be half-off, $5. And remember, teams can consist of yourself or you and one other person. We will collect the ballots/flight sheets during the ten days, and then tabulate them the week after. We will announce the results on Monday, June 24th, and host a final taste-off competition on July 1st for the top twenty or so individuals/teams at the Hawthorne Hophouse, 6-8pm. Participation for this top-tier event will be free, and finalists will get to participate in a deciding 12-flight round. In the event that there are more than twenty perfect scores, all of these beer connoisseurs will be allowed to compete at the final level. The Grand Prize winner will not only receive bragging rights, but also a Hophouse Lifetime Mug Club Membership, a Hophouse hoodie, and a “2013 Beer Bräul Champion” engraved Bräuler. The next top five finishers will also receive Bräulers, t-shirts, and gift certificates for growler fills. Come see if you have what it takes to be a Portland beer champ!

Hophouse photo contest

Send us your pics!

Of you in your Hophouse shirt, you at the Ciderfest (yea!), or you just looking really awesome drinking a beer at the Hophouse. Or many beers. Whatever.

Email us the photos at hophousecentral@gmail.com. We’ll pick our favorites, top ten photo submissions get shirts, top photo taker gets a hoodie and tickets to the next Timbers match. Good tickets. Uncovered, but you’re an Oregonian, right?

Also, for the second half of April, we’ve got a huge selection of Belgians at Fifteenth Avenue – mostly Pfriem, some of it’s pretty rare. So if you love the Belgians, please stop by. Flights are discounted for these beers, all days, until they run out. Even if you think you don’t like Belgians, or are on the fence, this is a good time to try a bunch of them for cheap – 6-flight for six bucks.

By sending us your photos, you’re agreeing to let us use it (but not names or personal info) for marketing purposes.

Top Oregon IPA of 2012

So many to choose from…

Yo hopheads, we are collecting votes for the top IPA brewed here in Oregon last year. If you want to vote, you have to sign up for our newsletter (scroll down to right) and we’ll send you a newsletter and survey within two days. Or you can come vote in person at our pubs – all patrons get a ballot when they get their check. There is one vote per person – votes are tied to emails/names and multiple votes from the same name/email are discarded. The top beer will be on tap for six months on our Tap 1 at both locations, and will be the first non-roting tap we’ve had since we opened either pub. Plus if you vote for the winner, YOU WIN TOO. Either a beer for a buck, virtually free growler fills for the duration, or free schwag. We are hoping the winning brewers will come to an announcement party on 2/13/13. Consider this – if it’s a newer, smaller brewery, this could give some upstart company a bit of a push. Winning this will help them increase production to brew more beer for us (and it will be a lot) and it may help them get on tap elsewhere in PDX. So circle 2/13 on your calendar, because we’ll have deeply discounted beer that night, probably even more free stuff, and a lot of fun.

Eel River Promotion at Hawthorne!

Come to the Hawthorne Hophouse this Thursday, June 21st to get your hands on a great pint of Eel River beer. The brewery out of Fortuna, California was the first in America to go all organic. Their “Be Natural, Drink Naked” pesticide free philosophy has created some delicious brews that have won hundreds awards both locally and internationally. We’ll have free schwag to give away and one of their beer representatives will be there handing out coupons for Eel River beer from 6-9pm. So come enjoy the longest day of the year while sippin’ on organic beer on the patio at Hawthorne.

Father’s Day at the Hophouse

With 24 rotating beers on tap, the Hophouse is an excellent destination for dads on any day.  Pair his favorite local brew with a prime rib dinner and you have Father’s Day. The Hawthorne and Fifteenth Avenue Hophouse will have a prime rib special starting at 3:00 and beer specials running all day this Father’s Day, June 17th. So whether your dad likes a refreshing summer ale or an IPA packed full of hops, we’ve got him covered!

Reservations are recommended for the Prime Rib Dinner!
